Elizabeth Bastedo began as a classroom instructor in the Office Systems Technology/Administrative Office Technology program and later served as Department Chair. As a faculty member, Elizabeth delivered high quality instruction and instituted high standards in an immensely technical area. Her teaching experience covered a wide range of courses including computer literacy, microcomputer applications, business communications, Excel, Word and other technology courses. Elizabeth used a variety of teaching methodologies including lecture, discussion, demonstration, hands-on lab, open lab, and independent experimentation and exploration. She was truly a master teacher and continually evaluated and modified her teaching methods in order to respond effectively to student needs. She used D2L effectively in her face-to-face and hybrid courses. In addition, Elizabeth was a Certified Online Instructor and taught online courses using D2L and SAM. She also served as a “Technology Coach” and taught computer and office technology to faculty. She became known as the “Excel Queen” and was first on the call list for an Excel question or to solve complex data problems.

She was very much a student advocate and had a heart for her students. She was regularly involved in student activities and events, which led her to become the Advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society. As our PTK Advisor, Elizabeth provided mentorship to students and organized various service projects and community events. She truly exemplified the mission of Phi Theta Kappa, which is to “recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students; provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.” Elizabeth created an environment for student success with her enthusiasm and energy.

Her excellent technology and project management skills made her perfect to help with the College’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). As our QEP Coordinator, Elizabeth was instrumental in developing, writing, and implementing the QEP to improve student success, retention and graduation. She created and managed the Freshman Focus Center, lead the Comprehensive Advising Process, and maintained reports on the progress of the QEP. Under her leadership, the QEP was completed last summer and stands as a testament to the deep love Elizabeth had for the college community – especially our students.

Elizabeth formed deep and lasting friendships and she leaves an enormous hole in the lives of many. The world is a little less bright, a little less exciting, and a little less happy without her in it.
